upper cretaceous in iran

چکیده
between the lower and upper cretaceous there were some diastrophic movements, belonging to the austrain phase. these movements, which can be traced in many parts of north and central iran, caused extensive precenomanian erosion. even in southwest iran a wide spread discontinuity is reported at the base of the kazhdumi formation, which is possibly related to these movements. in the kopet - dagh area, also, in northeast iran, a discontinuity is reported at the top of the lower cretaceous. thus the cenomanian is transgressive on the albian or even older deposits and consists mainly of detritic, glauconitic sediments, which were deposited in a shallow environment. because of the orogenic or epeirogenic movemements in the time interval between cenomanian and sautonian (sub - hercynian) , turonian and coniacian sediments are missing in many parts of north, central and southwest iran. in the areas where sediments of this age are present, they consist mainly of pelagic, « oligostegina » limestone. the absence of these stages is caused probably rather by pre - santonian erosion, than by non - deposition, because pebbles of this age are occasionally found within younger sediments. in santonian time there was again a big marine transgression, and limestones and marls of this stage have been deposited in most parts of iran. in many parts of iran, where the post - cretaceous early tertiary erosion has not been deep enough, sediments of campanian and maestrichtian age occur. these sediments comprise either pelagic deposits or neritic, rudist: limestone. orogenic movements aesween lower and upper maestrichtian are reported from djandagh-biabank area. the formation of the « coloured melange » probably took place mainly in upper cretaceous time. the melange consists of a chaotic mixture of different sedimentary and ultrabasic rocks, which are confined to narrow and heavily thrusted zones in iran. at the end of the cretaceous and the beginning of the tertiary, strong orogenic movements of the laramide phase took place in north and central iran. in southwest iran and parts of the kopet _dagh ,these movements are mainly of epeirogenic type and caused only discontinuities between mesozoic and caenozoic sediments.

Upper Cretaceous Foraminifera from Japan
IN THIS PAPER the discovery in Japan of smaller Foraminifera from the Upper Cretaceous strata is recorded for the firsi: time. This contribution, in addition to its specific biostratigraphic application in Japan, has further interest by reason of its extension of the geo. graphic range ,of the widely distributed Cretaceous pelagic foraminiferan, Globotruncana. In the north Pacific region, Globo...
متن کاملUpper Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal from the Zagros basin (north-northwest Shiraz), Iran
The litho-and biostratigraphy of Upper Cretaceous (Gurpi Formation) has been investigated within a well-exposed section at the northern limb of Pey zard anticline, Abnow area, Southern Iran. The studied section consists mainly of grey marl, calcareous pyritic shale, and argillaceous limestones. The Formation unconformably overlies Sarvak Formation and the Tarbur Formation overlies it unconforma...
متن کاملPalynofacies-based sequence stratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous strata (Abderaz Formation) in east of Koppeh-Dagh Basin, Northeast of Iran
The Upper Cretaceous strata were studied in a composite stratigraphic section named here Padeha-Baghak section in east of Koppeh-Dagh basin, north east of Iran. In this study, palynostratigraphy, palynofacies and depositional environment history of Abderaz Formation were integrated with sequence stratigraphy. Determination of sea level history and sequence units of the Abderaz Formation using s...
متن کاملUpper Cretaceous Petroleum System of Northwestern Persian Gulf
Three well - known source rocks of the Zagros basin and the Persian Gulf are Mesozoic in age.The Jurassic Sargelu, Albian Kazhdumi and Neocomian-Coniacian Garau formations have charged the Cretaceous reservoirs of this area. The northwest part of the Persian Gulf is strongly influenced by two major N-S trending paleohighs (Hendijan- Bahregansar-Regesafid-Izeh and Kharge- Mish) and surrounding p...
متن کاملSystematic Interpretation Of Silicified Specimens of Upper Cretaceous Echinocorys ex. gr. scutata (Leske, 1778), Farokhi Formation, Central Iran
Echinocorys ex. gr. scutata is one of the most important echinids in the Upper Cretaceous deposits. In this regard, a stratigraphic section of the Farokhi Formation in the Central Iran is sampled. This formation is less known and described in the geology of Iran. According to the macropaleontological investigations, 1 genus and 1 specious of completely silicified Echinocorythidae are determined...
متن کاملExtreme Cranial Ontogeny in the Upper Cretaceous Dinosaur Pachycephalosaurus
BACKGROUND Extended neoteny and late stage allometric growth increase morphological disparity between growth stages in at least some dinosaurs. Coupled with relatively low dinosaur density in the Upper Cretaceous of North America, ontogenetic transformational representatives are often difficult to distinguish. For example, many hadrosaurids previously reported to represent relatively small lamb...
